Glasses are a very common accessory that we use in various fields and situations, for example, to protect our eyes from sunlight, headlights of oncoming cars, the radiation of computer monitors or to improve vision. Their properties may differ, but the design is very similar for all of them.

  • Lenses. This is what we look through, and what affects our vision. They are the main element of glasses. In modern optics, preference is given to plastic lenses, but in some cases, glass is used. It is the lenses that provide vision correction or provide protection from the sun if we are talking about sunglasses.
The lenses of modern sunglasses can consist of one or more layers of various coatings:
  • Illuminating - applied to increase transparency and transmitted light. The anti-glare effect is shown when working with a computer and drivers. Read our article about how to choose the right eyewear for drivers. How To Choose The sunglasses For Driving?

  • Polarizing is a special filter film that delays horizontally reflected light. Thanks to this, the image is clean and clear, without visual interference. Suitable for fishing, winter sports.
  • Photochromic is a coating that changes its color from dark to light depending on the intensity of illumination. This coating is called chameleons.
  • UV-blocking - used to protect the retina from harmful UV rays. The coating is transparent, so it can also be applied to medical glasses.
  • Hydrophobic - increases the smoothness of the glass surface, because of this, water droplets, dirt, and dust particles do not linger on the glasses.
  • Color - different coloring of lenses increases the clarity and contrast of the image, different colors are used for beauty and for medical purposes, to improve vision in cataracts.
Frame. The eyeglass frame is usually made of metal, plastic, or a combination of the two. The frame, in turn, consists of individual parts:

  • Frame front. This is the main part of your glasses frame. It’s what secures your lenses in place. The lens rims should be strong enough to fix them and not let them fall out, but at the same time light, for ease of wearing.
  • Bridge. The bridge is the center of the frame that rests on your nose and joins the two rims together.
  • Nose guards. This detail is not available on all models. Nose pads are made of silicone or soft plastic. They are attached to the frame using movable or rigid joints. They are designed for a softer fit and prevent the glasses from slipping.
  • Temples. The temples are the long arms on the side of the frame that fits over your ears for a snug fit.
  • Temple Tips. Plastic pieces that cover the temple ends where the temples rest behind the ears. They provide extra comfort to the wearer, especially on glasses with metal frames. Also referred to as earpieces.
  • Hinges – Moveable joints found on the inside of the frame which allows the temples to fold inward.
